The Sagrada Familia, Gaudí's Masterpiece
Antoni Gaudí took over the direction of the works in 1883, balancing the construction of the temple with his other projects until 1914, when he decided to accept no more commissions and dedicate himself exclusively—until his death in 1926—to the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia.
Gaudí set out to build an enormous structure based on a Latin cross plan with five naves. Drawing inspiration from the great medieval cathedrals, Gaudí developed a reinterpretation of the Gothic style for the Sagrada Familia, viewing it as essential to symbolize a close connection between the celestial and the earthly through height and light.
The architect took inspiration from nature in designing the entire basilica, using trees as a model for the interior columns and incorporating sculptures of animals and natural elements into the facades and towers. The 43 years Gaudí dedicated to the construction of the Sagrada Familia allowed him to realize that his project could achieve what architects before him had not: the creation of a perfect temple.
