"The Persistence of Memory" is Salvador Dalí's most famous painting. The work shows three pocket watches dissolving, arranged in the Catalan landscape in front of the steep cliffs of Cap de Creus. A fly sits on a clock, symbolizing how time passes. Another symbol is being devoured by ants, a symbol of transience and decomposition. In the middle of the painting, a clock ticks over an abstract face of the artist depicted in profile, with his eyes closed.
