SAINT GEORGE'S DAY: THE LEGEND OF THE ROSE AND THE BOOK
According to popular legend, in Cappadocia there lived a dragon that terrorized the people. The frightened inhabitants decided to deliver two lambs to it every day. It was by far the only option they had to satisfy its hunger and survive the fearsome creature. The time came when there weren't enough animals left, so they decided to send one lamb and one person, who would be chosen by lottery. The family that lost a member to the dragon's appetite received all kinds of riches as compensation. One day, it was the princess's turn. To prevent her death, George confronted the dragon and struck it with his sword, finally toppling the beast. A rose sprouted from the creature's blood, which the martyr gave to the king's daughter.
April 23 is the date UNESCO established as World Book Day in 1995. However, in Catalonia, it is traditional to exchange roses and books between couples as a representation of Saint George's heroism.
